The Four Stages
Appraise and assess the taxable property
Each county appraisal district estimates the property's market value as of January 1.
Protest the appraised value
County appraisal district appraised values are sent to property owners around April 30. The appraisal review board begins hearing protests around mid May and completes hearings by mid July.
Adopt the tax rate
Each taxing unit adoptes its tax rates for their operations in August or September.
Collect the taxes
Property tax bills go out and collection starts around October 1. Taxpayers have until the following January 31 to pay their taxes. Penalties and interest begin February 1.
